Our research aims to analyze the question of transcendence, a topic that comprises an entire tradition of phenomenology. The dissertation proposes to bring to light the specificity of transcendence as an “operative concept” running throughout the texts of Merleau-Ponty and Patočka. Although not itself the object of specific reflection, this concept nonetheless plays a decisive role in the question of appearance. The notion of transcendence – which is present everywhere but rarely visible – inaugurates a new “mode of thinking” against “phenomenological positivism”, which allows for the essence of the thing or of “something” to be freed and helps in approaching the ensemble of phenomena. This notion is not perfectly known in the first hand, instead applying itself secondarily to the consciousness, to the thing, to the other, or to the world. True elucidation unveils itself differently, and takes on meaning from appearance.
