Over the course of the Sixteenth century, stucco became a widely used decorative technique in the palaces of the nobility in Rome. In its evocation of the art of antiquity stucco was a medium that enabled the expression of the kind of Romanitas sought after by these patrons, while at the same time ensuring lower costs and more rapid completion times than other artistic techniques. But it was in its use to set off mural painting by means of very sophisticated framing techniques that stucco revealed its full potential, exploiting the paradox between the sculptural imitation of nature and the imitation of marble as statuary ornament. The atelier of Daniele da Volterra offered some of the most innovative and original contributions in this category, drawing on the Michelangelesque repertory, and then questioning the limits of art and its power of communication vis-à-vis the beholder.
